Men's basketball: Bucknell's bench comes up big against Boston Univeristy

BOSTON, Mass. — It was thanks in large part to Bucknell’s bench that the Bison earned a win on the road at first-place Boston University on Sunday afternoon.

Four players off the bench combined to score 30 of Bucknell’s 32 final points en route to a 63-53 win at Agganis Arena.

Those four off the bench were Ryan Frazier, Cory Starkey, D.J. MacLeay and John Azzinaro. Those four helped Bucknell rally from nine points down. Frazier ended the day with 10 points, Azzinaro added nine points, four boards and four assists while Starkey had eight points and seven rebounds. MacLeay had seven points and seven rebounds, including his first career trey.

Cameron Ayers led the Bison with a team-high 11 points while Brian Fitzpatrick led the Bison with 12 rebounds.

The win marked the fourth straight victory for the Bison and put them into a fourth-place tie with Army in the Patriot League.

Bucknell improves to 14-13 overall and 9-7 in the Patriot League while Boston University fell to 20-9, 13-3 and had a five-game winning streak snapped by the Bison.

“Our bench production was off the charts,” Bucknell coach Dave Paulsen said. “The group that was in there at the end did a terrific job.”

The Bison outrebounded the Terriers, 46-27, with 14 of those rebounds on the offensive end and Bucknell finished with a 15-6 edge in second-chance points.

Boston University was led by Nathan Dieudonne’s 13 points while Maurice Watson scored 12, dished out six assists and swiped away five steals.

The Terriers used a 10-2 run to start the second half to lead BUcknell, 33-24. The largest lead of the day for Bucknell was 12 with just under a minute left when Frazier had a breakaway layup.

The Bison used a 39-20 run in the second half to pull away from Boston University and get the victory. The Terriers struggled shooting, as Bucknell held Boston University to 32 percent shooting overall and held the Terriers from the 3-point arc to just 4-for-18 shooting.

The Bison play their final regular season home game on Wednesday against Lehigh at 7 p.m.
