H.S. girls basketball: Mount Carmel's Perles named to Class AA all-state team

She may not have realized how much her arrival magnified expectations for Mount Carmel’s girls basketball team, but Christina Perles did her part to ensure the Red Tornadoes met them all.

The senior transfer from Lourdes Regional led Mount Carmel in scoring, free-throw percentage and 3-point percentage, while finishing second on the team in rebounding.

The Red Tornadoes, in turn, won their third consecutive Heartland-II championship and third straight District 4 Class AA title, and advanced to the state tournament’s second round.

Perles was honored Tuesday with a place on The 2012-13 Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State Girls Basketball team. Perles was voted to the Class AA third team, a year after Kim Andruscavage earned the same award for Mount Carmel. Perles was also a HAC-II all-star.

Perles averaged 17.4 points and 7.0 rebounds over 28 games, while hitting 76.5 percent of her free throws, 43 percent of her field goals and 38 percent of her 3-point attempts.

She scored 20 or more points 10 times, with a season-high of 30 in a first-round state playoff win over Wilkes-Barre GAR. She pulled 10 or more rebounds four times.

The Red Tornadoes won 14 of their final 16 games, ending the season with a 50-43 loss to Pine Grove in the Class AA second round. Pine Grove junior Becky Evans, who averaged 19.0 ppg., was a Class AA first-team all-state selection.

Steelton-Highspire’s Malia Tate-DeFreitas averaged 34.8 points during her senior year (scoring more than 1,000 points) and was voted the Class A Player of the Year for an unprecedented third time.
