Weidlich's 21 helps Crusader men beat King's

WILKES-BARRE — Steven Weidlich scored 21 points, including three 3-pointers, and Susquehanna was unconscious from the foul line Saturday at the Monarch Classic.

Weidlich led a trio of Crusader scorers in double-figures, and SU buried 33 of 40 free throws in a 73-67 win over host King’s College.

Brandon Hedley knocked down five treys among his 19 points, while Harley Sellinger had 18 to go along with five rebounds.

Susquehanna (4-3) did not trail in the game, but King’s pulled to within 65-62 with two minutes to play. The Crusaders sank five free throws in the final 33 seconds to ice it.

SU opened the game with a 5-1 run. The Monarchs were able to tie the game at seven before the Crusaders went on a 12-2 run to go up by 10 with 12:16 on the clock.

King’s (4-4) got within one at 19-18, but pulled no closer over the remaining 10:32 of the half. The Crusaders led 34-30 at halftime.

Just 25 seconds into the second half, King’s knotted the score at 34-all. However, seven unanswered Crusader points, five from Sellinger, made it 41-34 Susquehanna.

With 12:52 left, SU went ahead by double digits, 52-40, courtesy of a Weidlich 3-pointer.

The Monarchs kept the margin in single-digits before making a late-game run at the lead.

Susquehanna plays Wilkes at 1 p.m. today to close the Monarch Classic.
