Todd Hummel's track & field column: Seal's Auman expands repertoire

Alexis Auman had made a name for herself in track and field for being one of the top jumpers in District 4 Class AAA.

Auman won the district triple jump gold medal last year as a sophomore and finished second to Danville’s Shelby Freedman in the long jump.

This season, Auman set the Selinsgrove school record in the triple jump with a leap of 36-10¼ this past Saturday at the Jack Roddick Invitational at Shippensburg University. Auman broke the 34-year old record of Kathy Rhoads. Rhoads’ jumped 36-9 in 1980.

However, Selinsgrove coach Jeff Kiss saw something more in his standout jumper, beginning last season.

“When I started coaching here last year, she was solely a jumper, obviously a very good one,” Kiss said. “All of our kids do running work, even the field event athletes. I was just watching her work out one day last year and thought she runs pretty well.”

Kiss began putting Auman in the 1600 relay last season, but as her junior season began, Kiss had Auman train in running the open 400 and 200 for the Seals.

“She’s turned into a pretty good 200 and 400 (runner), one of our better ones as you saw (Tuesday),” Kiss said.

In Tuesday’s huge Heartland Athletic Conference Division I win over Lewisburg, Auman won the 400 in 1:01.66 and finished second to teammate Natalia Brown in the 200, just the third time she’s run the 200 in a meet.

It’s been an adjustment for the junior.

“This is my first year running, other than the relay last year,” Auman said. “I really have to use my time wisely in practice. I’m comfortable jumping, but I get nervous for the running events. I ran real well (today), so I was happy with that.”

It’s also a time management issue during the meets, but it’s a bit easier for Auman during dual meets because it’s simpler to get the jumps out of the way first.

“I was able to do that (Tuesday) and it gives me a chance to rest a little bit and concentrate on my running,” Auman said.
