UFC 172: Boetsch falls to Rockhold

BALTIMORE — Luke Rockhold finished Tim “The Barbarian” Boetsch on Saturday night at UFC 172 at the Baltimore Arena.

Boetsch, the Northumberland-based fighter, went for a quick takedown in the middleweight bout. Rockhold quickly wrapped his legs around Boetsch’s neck and went for a choke.

Boetsch held it off for as long as he could but he eventually tapped to the kimura.

Boetsch, who was coming of a win over CB Dollaway in his last fight, has now lost three of his last four inside the octagon.

Rockhold (12-2), the former Strikeforce middleweight champion, is 2-1 since joining the UFC. He came into the contest ranked fifth, and is sure to go higher after Saturday’s victory.

Following the fight, Rockhold said that he wanted to fight either Vitor Belfort or Michael Bisping next. Belfort beat Rockhold by knockout in the latter’s UFC debut last year.

Boetsch, ranked 13th, is now 8-6 in his UFC career; he’s 17-7 overall.

Known for his kickboxing prowess, Rockhold never had to show it Saturday. A feared striker, he originally got into mixed martial arts after winning some jiu-jitsu tournaments.

Against Boetsch, he showed that jiu-jitsu ability. As a result, he’s moving up in the UFC rankings.

In other fights Saturday, lightweight Charlie Brenneman — like Boetsch, a former wrestler at Lock Haven University — lost by second-round KO to Danny Castillo.
