High school roundup: Selinsgrove boys tennis opens with victory

MIFFLINBURG -- Selinsgrove got the 2014 season off on the right foot by beating Mifflinburg, 4-1, in Heartland Athletic Conference Division I action Tuesday.

Selinsgrove (1-0) won all three singles matches in straight sets to quickly win the match.

Rob Smith led the way for the Seals with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Cameron Murphy in the No. 1 match.

Brady Fries added a 6-4, 6-3 win over Matt Southerton and Theron Fravel beat German exchange student Jakob Schmutzer 6-1, 6-1 in the other two singles matches.

Sam Bailey and Hareem Zain later added a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 1 doubles for Selinsgrove.

Lucas Payson and Ben Greb won at No. 2 doubles to break the shutout for Mifflinburg.

LEWISBURG -- After the Spartans picked up solid wins in the first two singles matches, the Green Dragons bounced back with wins in the other three matches to take the HAC-II win.

Leading Lewisburg (1-0) on the day were Tim Sprunt and both of its doubles teams. Sprunt beat Ian Hufnagle, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) at No. 3 singles, plus the No. 2 doubles team of Jack Schroeder and Ben Higgins picked up a 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 6-2 win.

Shikellamy 1

SUNBURY -- The Bulldogs got the HAC-I win, but it wasn't easy as the Braves lost two matches in three sets and another that went into tiebreaks in the first set.

The lone win for Shikellamy (0-1) came at No. 1 doubles, and it also came in three sets as Scott Shupe and Wes Bickel picked up a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.
