Bob Garrett's Talking Points: Happy Birthday, Mr. Stevens

(Continued)

You can’t get there from here

Word has been passed on from the state Bureau of Forestry that the tunnel on the railroad grade leading from Cherry Run to Poe Paddy is now closed because of unstable rocks that have been falling from the tunnel’s ceiling. At this point, it appears the tunnel will be closed for the summer. Alternate routes are being investigated but, for now, if you’re heading to Ingleby: “you can’t get there from here.”3D shoots

The sport of 3D archery is a form of target shooting competition. This type of archery can be enjoyed by anyone at any age or skill level. Typically, the targets are set in the woods or fields. The goal is to identify where to aim your shot on a life-like target and then to achieve the highest possible score. Generally, various animal-shaped targets are used that are close to life size with the types of animals ranging from elk and deer to skunks and even snakes.

The North Montour Sportsmen Club that is located near the PPL Montour Preserve holds 3D archery shoots on the first Sunday of the month from April through September. This Sunday, shooter registration will run up to 2 p.m. and everyone is welcome to come and try out this great sport. For more information, please contact Matt Swartz at 490-2784.

Take a hike

This Sunday, you can join a moderate hike of the Black Forest Trail in Lycoming County. This 7-mile stroll will be on the plateau area just off the Coudersport Pike between Pine Creek and the West Branch of the Susquehanna. Plan to meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Fin, Fur and Feather shop on Route 44. The hike leader is Joanne Heimer and you may let her know that you want to hike along by touching base at: jheimer@comcast.net.
