Scott Dudinskie's high school field hockey column: A rare apology

College kids wrongfully overlooked

Daily Item

---- — We don't apologize much in this business. Which is good, I suppose, if it means we're getting it right most of the time. (And, yes, I realize some of you believe that's debatable at best.)

We writer-types also don't apologize enough.

Oh, sure, we'll duck behind the conventional newspaper correction when a mistake is brought to our attention.

Rarely, though, do we fess up to an oversight or other failing, especially if it's something only our conscience recognizes as wrong.

After all, why bring attention to a shortcoming that affects only one person or family within a circulation of 25,000?

Well, Morgan Fleetwood deserved better. She had a career at Indiana University that demanded a feature story to highlight her accomplishments, rather than the occasional brief which boiled down her accolades to the bare necessities.

The 2008 Selinsgrove graduate was a third-team All-American and All-Big Ten first team after a senior year in which she set the IU single-season record for points (38). She matched the program's mark for game-winning goals in a season (six), as well as assists (12). She became the Hoosiers' all-time leader in goals (44), points (115) and shots (306), and tied the mark for career game-winners with 14.

Her 2012 senior season was the best in a remarkable collegiate career that, simply put, got the short-shrift.

I apologize, Morgan, to you and also to the other college players from the Valley whose careers didn't garner so much as a brief on my watch the last couple years.

Unfortunately, the best we can do now is (what we hope is) a comprehensive list of local graduates playing in college, and a pledge to do a better job with updates as the season goes along:
