By The Daily Item

BLOOMSBURG -- The Bloomsburg University football team has announced its team captains for the 2013 season. Running back Franklyn Quiteh, center Chris Steck and linebacker Justin Shirk have all been chosen as captains for the upcoming season.

Quiteh is coming off a season in which he was a national finalist for the Harlon Hill trophy for the top player in Division II. He won the Division II rushing title in both total yards and yards per game. Quiteh ran for a career-high 2,121 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Steck, a graduate of Mount Carmel High School, is a two-time captain and was part of an offensive line that led the fifth-ranked rushing offense in Division II at 315.75 yards per game last season. The offense also ranked on the BU all-time leaderboard in points scored (451, 2nd) and touchdowns (61, 2nd). The offensive line allowed just two sacks in BU's final seven games.

"Chris is a repeat captain and he did a great job in leading the 2012 team," Coach Danny Hale said. "He has a great work ethic and is an intense leader."

Shirk was named All-PSAC East second team for the second straight year in 2012. He was second on the team in tackles with a career-high 93 with a team-high 60 solo stops.

HOOPING FOR A CURE: Men's and women's basketball teams from all 16 PSAC schools will participate in Hooping for a Cure during the end of January and throughout February. Hooping for a Cure is part of a national breast cancer awareness and fundraising effort on behalf of the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association in partnership with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and The V Foundation.

All 16 institutions have designated a home game for their Hooping for a Cure contest. At each game the athletes will wear black (men) or pink (women) T-shirts during warm-ups to show their support of women's cancer awareness. Fans will also have the opportunity to donate towards breast cancer research via the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
