CROSS COUNTRY SKIING: Today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. you can learn the basics of cross-country skiing from Brad Bubb at the R.B. Winter State Park. Equipment is available to rent for $12 per person. After the class participants master the basics of cross country skiing there will an outing through the park. You must pre-register by calling the park at 966-1455. It will be cold at the park so dress in layers.
BEAR HARVEST COMES IN THIRD: The final 2012 bear harvest results show that hunters in our state harvested 3,632 bears, which ranks as the third highest in Pennsylvania history. The record bear harvest was set in 2011, when hunters took 4,350 bears. Bears were harvested in a record-setting 56 counties. In our Valley, the county-by-county harvests were: Lycoming, 341; Centre, 143; Union, 82; Perry, 32; Columbia, 36; Northumberland, 26; Snyder, 14; and Montour, 3. The Northumberland and Perry county bear harvests were more than double from the previous year. In Montour County no bears were harvested in 2011.
Monday evening will be the third in a series of 10 fly-tying classes that are being offered by the local Trout Unlimited Chapter. The classes run from 7 to 9 p.m. at Christ's Lutheran Church in Lewisburg. This week, Palmer Hackling will instruct on the art of tying using streamers and soft hackles. By the end the class the participants will know how to tie a woolly bugger, a partridge and tan and a mini-clouser minnow.
