Bob Garrett's Talking Points: Falcon cam gives up-close view

(Continued)

Full moon

The full moon of February will hit its peak Monday evening in what the native people of our valley traditionally called the Snow Moon since heavy snowfalls typically occur this month.

The February full moon has many names, just as every month does. In addition to its Snow Moon nickname, it's also known as the Hunger Moon, Storm Moon and Candles Moon.

These names come from the fact that we are now in the "bleak mid-winter" when traditionally food could become scarce and the weather foul.

Outdoor show

The annual Cabin Fever Outdoor Show rolls into Mifflinburg H.S. this weekend. The show hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. This is a great show and an excellent opportunity to find out what's happening in the "great out-of-doors" in our area.

Learn about invasives

You won't have to worry about Martians or other aliens at this free session, but you will learn about "bio-bullies" and what you can do to halt their spread.

During Homeschool Day at the R.B. Winter State Park on Wednesday, participants will learn about non-native and invasive species during a 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. session for students ages 9 to 18.

The discussion will focus on alien plants and animals that crowd out and impact native wildlife and plants.

This is a great program for students participating in the "PA Envirothon."

Pre-registration is required. Please call 966-1455 to register. All participants need bring along a lunch with drinks, and make sure to dress for both indoor and outdoor activities.

Learn to kayak

The great folks with the Bloomsburg Quest Outdoor Program are offering beginner kayaking lessons on Tuesday evening.

You and your family members can learn tips on how to paddle a kayak or even roll a kayak within the safety of a heated pool.

The cost is just $5 for the general public and you can learn more by visiting: http://quest.bloomu.edu/?page id=3850 or by calling (570) 389-4409.
