H.S. roundup: Shikellamy baseball starts year with win over Warrior Run

TURBOTVILLE — The blustery conditions may have prevented Shikellamy from getting much contact with the ball, but the hits the Braves got were enough to beat Warrior Run in baseball, 7-3, in a five-inning Heartland Athletic Conference cross-over game Monday.

Shikellamy (1-0) had just four hits in the game, but Matt Snyder hit a two-run double in the second inning, and the Braves led 5-0 in the top of the third.

Nick Dunn later led off the fifth with a double before Brandon Kashuba hit an RBI single to bring him home. Jean Turber added a single and two runs scored in the win for Shikellamy.

Jared Bender hit an RBI double in the game for Warrior Run (0-1).

Midd-West 12, Juniata 11

MIDDLEBURG — The Mustangs had three big innings, and Ryan Combs had a hand in all of them to help lead Midd-West to a season-opening nonleague victory.

Combs hit an RBI single in both the first and second innings as Midd-West (1-0) took a 9-7 lead. In the fourth inning Combs singled and scored on a bases-loaded walk by Zane Leister to provide the game-winning run for the Mustangs.

Combs finished 3-for-4 as Midd-West pounded out a total of 13 hits on a cold and windy day.

“It was a brutal night. It was cold, and the kids were cold,” said Midd-West coach Ron Flood. “We didn’t play like we could’ve played, and neither did Juniata.”

Lewisburg 4, South Williamsport 1

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT — The Green Dragons continued their season-opening win streak by taking all of their wins in straight sets versus the Mounties in the Heartland-II matchup

Tim Sprunt was nearly perfect in his 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, while Nick Chamberlin and Matt Still lost just two games in their No. 1 doubles win for Lewisburg (4-0).

At No 2 doubles, Jack Schroeder and Ben Higgins pulled out a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win to seal the Green Dragons’ win.
