PORT ROYAL -- Since 1998, the pro stocks have been a regular support class at Port Royal Speedway.
Starting next year, they'll give way to a new 355 c.i. econo late model division.
"Anytime when you decide to make a change or try starting any new division there is always a risk factor to it," said Port Royal promoter Steve O'Neal. "But over the past several years, there has been a steady decline in the pro stock numbers competing not only at Port but at all the area tracks."
The new class, designed to be an economical choice for stock car drivers, will utilize more easily acquired late model chassis as it replaces the pro stocks. However limitations regarding engines and shocks among other specifications are intended to keep operating costs more budgetary.
"Since we are the only track around that runs 410 sprints and super late models weekly it just make sense to try to build feeder classes for both divisions," O'Neal added.
A minimum of 15 shows are tentatively slated on the 2014 Port Royal schedule of events.
FESTIVAL TIME: On Saturday, the Selinsgrove Speedway will be present at the 35th annual Market Street Festival in downtown Selinsgrove.
Teams are invited to put their race cars on display prior to the evening's National Open.

Last year's one-day event drew a stellar field of 51 cars and this year's field is expected to be even bigger for the two-day show. Port Royal Speedway will close the season on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. with the final show of the season for the 410 sprints along with super sportsman and a demolition derby.
