Todd Hummel's college football column: Better days ahead

Despite both teams being picked to finish near the bottom of their respective leagues, Susquehanna and Bucknell still had high expectations for the 2013 season.

However after one month of the season, a cursory look at the records of both squads shows that neither has met those expectations.

But there are positives on the horizon for both teams.

For the Bison, who open Patriot League play at Lafayette this Saturday, improvement will come once their turnover problems are solved.

After out-gaining Cornell last week (but losing 49-13 because of six turnovers), Bucknell wasted an outstanding effort by its defense with five second-half turnovers in 16-0 loss to Sacred Heart on Saturday night.

Not that coach Joe Susan would except any excuses, but Bucknell played without four-year starter Brandon Wesley at quarterback and starting tailback Matt DelMauro, plus freshman CJ Williams left the contest with an injury in the third quarter one week after netting the first 100-yard game of his career.

However a stout defense, the return of Wesley (nursing a lower leg injury), hopefully by Oct. 12, should help some of the Bison's offensive woes.

Susquehanna has dug a itself a bit bigger hole with an 0-4 overall, 0-3 Centenial Conference start. But when hit by injuries at tailback, a former local high school star got his shot for the Crusaders in a loss to Gettysburg.

Merle Moscarello, Lewisburg's all-time leading rusher, made the most of his first start in a college uniform against the Bullets on Saturday. He carried the ball 32 times for 176 yards and a touchdown in Susquehanna's 42-28 loss.

Moscarello had carried the ball just five times his career before Saturday's game.

Former Shikellamy quarterback Chuck Schlegel originally went to college to play baseball, but he returned to the gridiron last season at Wake Forest University, playing on special teams.
