SELINSGROVE -- Selinsgrove Speedway returns to racing on Saturday with the 12th annual Firecracker 30 for 358 sprint cars. Also on the card will be the late models, pro stocks and roadrunners.
The 30-lap feature for the 358 sprint cars pays $2,000 to win. Time trials, heats and a B-main will be the qualifying format.
Past winners of the Firecracker race as a 40-lap feature were the late Jim Nace of Thompsontown (2002), Bob Beidleman of Walnutport (2003), Dave Calaman of Carlisle (2004), Nate Snyder of Halifax (2005) and Blane Heimbach of Selinsgrove (2006). In 2007, the race was shortened to 30 laps and was won by Calaman. Scott Flammer of West Milford, N.J., (2008) Pat Cannon of Etters (2009), Snyder (2010), Logan Schuchart of Hanover (2011) and Heimbach (2012) are also past winners of the 30-lap event.
In 358 and 360 sprint car competition this season, 12 races have produced seven different winners. Cannon leads the list with five wins.
Jason Shultz of Carlisle is the only other repeat winner with two victories. Mark Smith of Sunbury; Tony Stewart of Rushville, Ind.; Eric Tomecek of Abbottstown; JJ Grasso of Pedricktown, N.J., and T.J. Stutts of Liverpool have scored single wins.
SING A SONG: Former Ms. Selinsgrove Speedway and Ms. Motorsports, Robin Johnson of Selinsgrove, will be singing and playing guitar with Jason Yoder tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at McGuigan's Public House in Sunbury. Johnson is the cousin of former sprint car and ARCA driver Lenny Krauthiem of Penns Creek. The duo will perform songs from the 1980s to now.
JUST LIKE DAD: Selinsgrove Speedway pro stock driver Kyle Bachman of Selinsgrove posted this conversation with his 5-year-old son Dalton on Facebook last week after they raced in the Kid Karts class at Penns Creek:
"I asked him how he felt after the race. He (my son, Dalton) said, 'well my arms are tired.' I said, well, you have to hang on to it. He said 'well, you're the pit crew, if you would make it turn better."
Kids do say the darndest things!
SEEING DOUBLE: Port Royal Speedway presents another camera and autograph night on Saturday starting at 6 p.m. The program also include Kids Racecar Rides at intermission. The late models will have Twin 15-lap features along with the 305 sprints, pro stocks and an enduro. The 410 sprint car return on July 6 the Pa. Speed Week show.
FAST TIMES: Penns Creek Raceway Park is presenting 'High Voltage Speedshow' on June 29 featuring some of the fastest go-karts on dirt. Among the classes racing on Saturday are the Unlimited All Stars, the Pa. Wings, the STORM Series, the Yahama Series, and the Pa. Caged Controlled Outlaws.
No. 300: Craig VonDohren continues to add to his 358 modified points lead at the Big Diamond Speedway as he scored his 78th-career feature win last Friday night. It was his fourth win of the season and the 300th of his career. All four wins at the track this year have come in the 30-lap, $3,000 to win features for the 358s. VonDoren needed a last-lap pass of Mike Mammana to score the win. Then on Saturday night at the Granview Speedway, VonDohren scored his 301st win and his 81st the 1/3-mile bull ring.
