LEWISBURG -- Faced with the possibility of playing games on consecutive days, the Selinsgrove Major Division All-Star team needed all it could get out of starting pitcher Drew Gabrielson in the District 13 Area II elimination bracket game Sunday against Juniata County.
Gabrielson pitched five strong innings and Selinsgrove got a couple of timely hits to pave the way for a 4-1 victory at Danny Green Field and stave off elimination for one more day.
Now Selinsgrove must turn around and play Mifflinburg today at 7:30 p.m. to stay alive.
Gabrielson threw just 49 pitches in the game. He also struck out four, walked none and allowed just three hits.
Blaise Zeiders then entered in the sixth to close the door on Selinsgrove's victory. He struck out one of the three batters he faced.
"That was huge (what Drew did) for us. We needed that," said Selinsgrove manager Stu Zeiders. "We were going to take him out to save him for (today), but he started off so good we thought we'd ride him and we got five innings out of him.
"That was good."
Offensively for Selinsgrove, Ben Heim and Christian Kantz both hit RBI doubles in a three-run second inning.
