MIFFLINBURG – Southern Columbia’s Blake Marks was ranked No. 1 in the state n the latest Off the Mat rankings, at 152 pounds. But he is not the top seed for Saturday’s revised and expanded District 4 Southern Sectional Tournament.
The top seed goes to Mifflinburg’s Cole Walter, who was ranked No. 3, and is a two-time state place-winner.
Marks, a sophomore, is 25-2, while Walter, a junior, is 31-2. They did not meet this year.
The top four place-winners will advance to the district tournament the following weekend in Williamsport. In addition, the loser of the preliminary round will be eliminated.
Walter is one of three Mifflinburg Wildcats to claim No. 1 seeds for the event. The others are Cooper Wagner, a sophomore, at 132, who is 14-11, and senior Noah Kuba, at 126, who is 20-9.
Milton took four No. 1 seeds with Brandon Stokes (195), a sophomore, at 16-6; Gage Heller, a sophomore, at 182, 16-6; returning state third-place finisher Ryan Preisch, a senior, at 160, who is 28-2; and Zack Bennett, a junior, at 145, who is 22-6.
Southern Columbia has a pair of top seeds with Kent Lane, a returning state sixthplace medalist, a junior at 138, just returning from knee surgery, who is 16-1, along with his brother, Todd, a freshman at 120, who is 25-3.
Midd-West also has two No. 1 seeds: Zach Longacre, at 220, a senior, at 23-9; and Alex Lieberman, at 170, a senior at 26-5, a returning state qualifier.
The other Valley wrestler to get a top seed was Line Mountain junior Cameron Newman, at 113. Newman is 27-5 and placed eighth in the state last year.
Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries followed by the quarterfinals. The championship finals are set for 7 p.m.
Pairings for the East Sectional, to be held at Benton, and including Warrior Run, were not available.
