Motorsports notebook: Weather playing havoc with local tracks

SELINSGROVE — First it was snow, then it was the cold.

Now it’s rain that is keeping race fans home.

A cold front came through Central Pennsylvania last Saturday, bringing with it rains and more frustration for race fans as all track in Central Pennsylvania: Selinsgrove, Lincoln, Port Royal and Williams Grove speedways, lost another race night to mother nature.

The 34th running of the Jack Gunn Memorial has been moved to June 7 at Selinsgrove. It was the fourth time this season the track has lost a show due to weather-related issues.

Williams Grove lost its second straight Saturday night series event. The Super Sportsman along with the late models and street stocks return on May 24.

Port Royal cancelled its show altogether and is working on a new makeup date for the now twice postponed late model feature. The new date will be announced in the near future.

Before the rains finally halted the racing at Lincoln Speedway, there were 37 410 sprint cars in the pits for the Outlaws tuneup show.

HELLO AGAIN: The Empire Super Sprints return to Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday for a full points show at 7. Joining them on the racing card will be the super late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners. Shawn Donath, of South Onondega, N.Y., led all 25 laps in the season-opening race for ESS at Can-Am Speedway in N.Y. The tour, which lost its second race of the year to rain, is in its 31st season of competition. There have been nine ESS events run at Selinsgrove dating back to the first event on July 8, 1995. The feature was won that night by the late Kramer Williamson.

SAY WHAT?: There will be no racing at Selinsgrove Speedway on the half-mile track next Saturday, May 24. Instead, Selinsgrove Raceway Park will host a two-day, go-kart show on Friday, May 23, and Saturday, May 24. The Saturday show will pay $10,000 to win.
