Area roundup: Mount Carmel's Varano joins 1,000-point club

MOUNT CARMEL — Several 1,000-point scorers have come out of Mount Carmel in recent years, and now you can add Ali Varano to that list.

Varano became the 11th girls player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, but it came in a losing effort as Mount Carmel fell to Montoursville, 52-48, in a Heartland-II matchup Wednesday.

The senior Red Tornado led Mount Carmel (9-3 overall) in scoring with 12 points.

Varano is the fourth girl to reach a 1,000 points in the past three seasons for Mount Carmel. Christina Perles, Kim Andruscavage and Ranotta Ahrensfield all preceeded Varano.

Kelsey Stine led all scorers with 20 points for Montoursville.



Milton 49, Selinsgrove 37

MILTON — Maggie Wetzel and Dani Lincoln scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, to lead the Black Panthers to the HAC-I win.

Jess Kerstetter tallied 12 points and Nikki Krebs had 10 to lead Selinsgrove.

Milton improves to 6-6, 2-3 in HAC-I.



Mifflinburg 44, Jersey Shore 32

MIFFLINBURG — Led by Sara Stauffer and Kayla Kline, the Wildcats beat the Bulldogs for the HAC-I victory.

Stauffer scored 18 points and Kline added 11 for Mifflinburg (9-2 overall).



Shikellamy 41, Midd-West 18

SUNBURY — The Braves got back to over .500 on the season by crushing the Mustangs in the HAC-I matchup.

Andrea Amerman, Alexa Moore, Kelsey Zimmerman, Kierra Smith and Bernadette Chaney all scored at least seven or eight points to Shikellamy (6-5, 4-2 HAC-I).

Midd-West falls to 4-7, 1-5.



Southern Columbia 53, Central Columbia 38

CATAWISSA — The Tigers blew open a tight game by scoring 21 points in the third quarter to take the HAC-II victory. Mackenzie Clark scored 17 points to lead Southern.



BOYS BASKETBALL

Jersey Shore 66, Mifflinburg 62


JERSEY SHORE — Mifflinburg went up to Jersey Shore and almost got the upset, but the Wildcats ran out of gas at the end to fall in the HAC-I matchup.

Three players scored in double figures for Mifflinburg (5-5, 1-4 HAC-I), with Jeremy Uscowskas leading the way with 15.

The Wildcats trailed by 11 at the half, but the squad made a comeback in the third period to trail by just two at 52-50.

“In the first half it was am very physical game as we would expect at Jersey Shore, and we gave up a lot of second-chance points,” said Mifflinburg coach Andre’ Roupp. “We battled back in the third, but we ran out of gas at the end.”

Ryan Eck scored 15 points and Cody Confair added 13 to lead Jersey Shore (7-4).



Greenwood 67, Line Mountain 24

MILLERSTOWN — The Wildcats jumped out to a 27-6 lead at the end of the first quarter to cruise to the Tri-Valley League win.

Lucas Grimm led Greenwood (10-3, 7-2 TVL) with 16 points and Tyler Fegley added 13 for the Wildcats.

Line Mountain falls to 1-12, 1-7 in league play.

MUNCY — The Tigers pulled out the HAC-II matchup behind a pin from Steve Toczylousky at 182 pounds in addition to a pair of forfeits at 220 and 113.
