H.S. boys basketball: Nine Valley players top HAC-I all-star team

By The Daily Item

Danville's quest for another District 4 title and berth in the state tournament came up a little short this year, losing to Shikellamy in the quarterfinals on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer. That didn't prevent Danville coach Lenny Smith from being named the Heartland Athletic Conference-Division I Coach of the Year, however.

Joining Smith from Danville are senior Bret Berg and junior Zach Kozick on the first team while senior Scotty Heeter earned second-team honors.

The Daily Item coverage area swept the HAC-I awards essentially, as nine of the 10 players were from the Valley.

Berg stepped up and led the Ironmen this season after the graduation of all-state selection Andrew Andreychik, leading the team with 16.6 points per game and a team-high 381 points scored. Kozick averaged 12.7 this season.

Senior Ernie Tyler was Shikellamy's lone first-team selection while his brother, junior C.J. Tyler, earned a second-team nod.

Ernie Tyler led the Braves with 344 points while C.J. added 301, including scoring the game-winning trey at the buzzer to knock off Danville, 50-47. The duo were a large part of Shikellamy's success in helping the Braves reach the District 4 Class AAA title game.

Senior Michael Jacobs and 1,000-point scorer Chad Diggan both were selected as first team nominations from Milton while Shamokin's Austin Stine rounded out the five.

Jacobs helped lead Milton this season en route to its first District 4 title since 2007 as the senior scored 355 points while averaging 14.8 per game. Jacobs also sank an area-high 54 treys.

Diggan added a 13.1 average and 288 points and eclipsed the 1,000-point mark this year.

Stine averaged 9.3 ppg while also having an 8.0 rebounds per game average. Stine also had 37 assists and 21 steals on the season.

Dillon Hoke and David Aurand led Selinsgrove's selections in the second team, joining Jeremy Uscowskas of Mifflinburg.
