ESPY -- Several members of the Southern Columbia football team joined forces recently to take first place in the Rams Power Day Weight Lifting competition.
The event was held at the Columbia Montour Vo-Tech School. Several school districts were represented at the competition. Among the districts represented were Columbia Montour Vo-Tech, Berwick, Bloomsburg, Mifflinburg, Muncy, Southern Columbia and Warrior Run.
Members of Southern's winning team, and their results: Robert Delbo, first in dead lift, 500 pounds, best overall dead lifter, in 181-pound weight class; Collyn Drake, second in bench press, 300 pounds, first in dead lift, 500 pounds, in 242 class; Austin Wilcox, first in bench press, 170, and second in dead lift, 315; Gabe Delbo, second in dead lift, 445, and third in bench press, 255.
Also, Joshua Yoder, third in dead lift, 455; Aaron Kroh, second in dead lift, 350; Grayson Belles, third in bench press, 225, and first in dead lift, 460; Jason Vought, second in dead lift, 335.
This was the first team title for Southern. The team took second to the Clairton Bears in Hershey in 2011. Southern also won several medals at the Wellsboro competition in February, but no team points were kept. In that event, Josh Tripp did a 525-pound deadlift, Robert Delbo did 505, Yoder did 500 and Gabe Delbo did 445.
The team plans to compete next month in the Clarks Summit bench and deadlift championships.\
Gable Delbo, who is 15, has a chance to break the state deadlift record of 413 pounds at 198 pounds in the 14-15 age group. His best is the 445 at CMVT.
