Bob Garrett's Talking Points: Scholastic archery on tap

"Nature always tends to act in the simplest way."

Nearly 900 students representing 30 schools from throughout our state will compete in the National Archery in the Schools Program's 2013 State Tournament on Friday, March 8th, at the Penn State Multi-Sport Facility in State College.

Pennsylvania's NASP helps school districts meet the state physical education curriculum requirements while introducing students, who may never have shot an arrow, to the world of competitive archery. "At least 125 schools are involved in the Pennsylvania NASP," according to Samantha Pedder, who is the Game Commission's outreach coordinator.

Independent studies have demonstrated that this program is a great introduction to the sport of archery and that many students choose to pursue the sport outside of school. The student participants will have opportunities to talk with representatives from USA Archery's Junior Olympic Archery Development Program, United Bowhunters of Pennsylvania and Penn State's Archery Team. The competition will begin at 9 a.m. and the high schools participating from our area include Halifax and Millersburg. To learn how to get NASP started in your school please contact Pedder at 717-787-4250 or visit the Facebook page by searching for "Penn NASP."

State park happenings

There will be an evergreen hike this Friday at R.B. Winter State Park from 1 to 3 p.m. This naturalist-led late-winter 2-mile, moderate hike will be a search for all types of "evergreens" throughout the park. Please pre-register by calling 966-1455.

On Saturday, there will be a winter tree identification walk at the Little Buffalo State Park near Newport. Identifying trees without their foliage is a valuable skill. Participants should meet at the park's entertainment pavilion before 3 p.m. to go along on this easy walk. Saturday evening at 7 there will be a movie at the Little Buffalo Park about bats, followed by a discussion about bat conservation and the ways we can keep these beneficial creatures healthy.
