Capsule previews for the four area teams in the state tournament

Four area schools tip off in the first round of the girls basketball PIAA state tournament, which begins today. The following are capsules previewing each of the four games for Lourdes Regional (Class A), Mount Carmel (AA), Southern Columbia (AA) and Danville (AAA).

Class A first round

Lourdes Regional (20-5) vs. Upper Dauphin (11-15)

Saturday, 6 p.m. at Williamsport H.S.

How they got here: District 4 champion Lourdes, the third seed, beat No. 6 Galeton in the quarterfinals 57-15; beat No. 2 Benton in the semifinals 64-47; and beat No. 1 Sayre in the final 37-27.

District 3 fourth-place Upper Dauphin, the No. 12 seed, beat No. 5 Harrisburg Christian in the first round 66-54; beat No. 4 Mt. Calvary in the quarterfinals 47-36; lost to No. 1 Steel-High in the semifinals 90-40; and lost to No. 3 High Point Baptist in the consolation game 56-30.

Probable starters: Lourdes - #12 Bailey Trell (So., G, 5-2, 6.1 ppg.); #23 Nikki Komara (Sr., G, 5-8, 9.5 ppg.); #25 Rachel Schultz (Jr., F, 5-6, 14.9 ppg.); #30 Sarah Getchey (Sr., G, 5-6, 11.6 ppg.); #31 Caitlin Funk (So., C, 5-7, 2.6 ppg.).

Upper Dauphin - #13 McKenzie Miller (Jr., G, 5-5, 7.9 ppg.); #21 Krysta Wynn (Sr., F, 5-7, 6.8 ppg.); #23 Tori Cleveland (Sr., F, 5-7, 3.2 ppg.); #24 Tayor Brown (So., G, 5-4, 6.6 ppg.); #25 Katie Schwenk (Sr., C, 5-10, 10.8 ppg.).

Notable: Lourdes won its fifth consecutive district championship. ... Schultz, a first-year starter, has posted six 20-point games. ... Schwenk was a first team Tri-Valley League All-Star.

What's next: The winner advances to Wednesday's second round and plays either District 1 champion Girard College (20-4) or District 11 runner-up Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg (17-6).

Class AA first round

Mount Carmel (22-4) vs. Wilkes-Barre GAR (14-11)

Tonight, 6 p.m. at Shamokin H.S.

How they got here: District 4 champion Mount Carmel, the top seed, beat No. 9 Wellsboro in the quarterfinals 67-31; beat No. 5 Muncy in the semifinals 73-44; beat No. 3 Southern Columbia in the final 66-43.

District 2 third-place GAR, the second seed, beat No. 15 Blue Ridge in the first round 82-34; beat No. 7 Hanover Area in the quarterfinals 42-32; lost to No. 3 Holy Cross in the semifinals 49-42; and beat No. 8 Lakeland in the consolation game 50-46.
