NORTHUMBERLAND -- There's no better remedy for a tough loss than a convincing win.
One day after it fell by a single run to Bloomsburg, the Sunbury/Northumberland American Legion team got its scoring jones back as the squad beat Shamokin/Mount Carmel, 9-4, in Monday's Susquehanna Valley League matchup.
Sunbury/Norry (4-3) took control of the game early by scoring four runs in the first inning and three more in the second for a 7-0 lead. A two-run double by Nick Dunn came in the second inning.
Kyle Leitzel helped get Sunbury/Norry back on track after Sunday's 1-0 loss to Bloomsburg. He pitched the first five innings, striking out six and walking none, to pick up his first senior legion win in his first start.
n Bloomsburg 8,
SELINSGROVE -- It was too little, too late for Selinsgrove as its seventh-inning rally fell short in the SVL matchup against Bloomsburg.
Bloomsburg (4-0) scored four times in the fifth and sixth innings to open up a six-run lead.
Highlighted by Isaiah Rapp's three-run double, Selinsgrove (2-3) plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh but that was it.
Selinsgrove will look to get back to .500 on Wednesday when the team travels to Bunker Hill for a game against Shamokin/Mount Carmel.
n Mifflinburg 8,
WILLIAMSPORT -- Oakley Whitesel not only got the complete-game win for Mifflinburg, but he also hit a three-run home run to power his team to the SVL victory.
Whitesel hit a three-run homer in the first inning to give Mifflinburg (3-1) a temporary 3-0 lead. On the Mound, Whitesel struck out five and gave up just four hits.
Mifflinburg would take the lead back the following inning, but the team wasn't able to gain any amount of separation in the runs column until scoring three times in the sixth.
