American Legion baseball: Danville moves into league lead

By The Daily Item

BLOOMSBURG -- Just two weeks into the American Legion baseball season, the Susquehanna Valley League divisional race already has a couple of frontrunners.

Danville and Bloomsburg took to the field on Wednesday with first place in the division at stake, and the race became tighter after Danville came away with a 6-5 victory.

Danville (4-1) scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to come back from a 5-0 deficit.

Shayne Riley had a two-run double in the fifth to get things going for the visitors.

"That was a big blow for them. We got a little lax after we scored those five runs," said Bloomsburg manager Larry Bechtel, whose team also moves to 4-1 on the year. "We had four errors, with three in one inning -- the sixth."

Riley finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Cody Keefer added a 2-for-4 for Danville.

HUGHESVILLE -- After Lewisburg opened with a three-run lead in the first, Hughesville's response was four-run bottom of the inning and the team kept on scoring as it took the West Branch League win.

Hughesville (3-1) essentially put the game away in the fourth inning when it scored two runs on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. Two hit-by-pitches and a walk came earlier in the inning.

Brett Reitz was responsible for the sac fly in the fourth, and he also singled in a run in the second for Hughesville, which has a game every day beginning today through June 29.

Mike Fisher and Joey Gardner both had two hits and a double for Lewisburg.
