AMERICAN LEGION

DANVILLE -- Wooden bats have taken the sting out of American Legion baseball, and the lack of power was not more evident than in the 11 innings that Danville played against West Branch League foe Berwick on Monday.

First, Danville needed 14 innings to beat Berwick 3-2 in a completion of a suspended game from June 5. Berwick then won the day's scheduled game, 4-2, in just seven innings.

The first game was halted after 10 innings with the score tied at 2. Scotty Heeter singled and then a pair of errors allowed him to score the winning run in the top of the 14th for Danville (6-3).

Heeter and Cody Keefer both went 2-for-6 and Mason Fausnaught got the win in relief after entering in the 10th inning for Danville. Fausnaught set the side down in order in the 14th to complete the win for Danville. Two of the outs were struck out looking.

In the day's scheduled game, Berwick tallied three runs in the sixth to get the win. The team had just three hits in the game.

"Wooden bats have changed the game. I love it though," said Danville manager Harold Albertson. "It's pure baseball."

Danville hosts West Snyder today in a make-up game before traveling to Beaver Springs on Wednesday to play the same team again.

n Selinsgrove 5,

West Snyder 1

SELINSGROVE -- Despite not recording a strikeout through five innings of work, Colin Rice kept West Snyder's offense quiet, giving up just five hits as the defense did the rest to give Selinsgrove a 5-1 Susquehanna Valley League win Monday.

West Snyder scored its lone run in the top of the first inning.

The Selinsgrove (5-5) offense sparked in the fourth when it scored three runs before tacking on another two in the fifth. Ryan Wagner led Selinsgrove by going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

West Snyder catcher Luke Zimmerman went 2-for-3 in the loss.

Selinsgrove travels to Sunbury/Norry on Friday.

n Hughesville 2,

Milton 0

HUGHESVILLE -- Brent Steele's RBI single in the sixth inning gave Hughesville a much-needed insurance run in the West Branch League win over Milton.

Hughesville (6-3) led just 1-0 after scoring a run on a wild pitch in the first.

That single run was plenty for starting pitcher Tyler Mitcheltree, who carried a no-hitter into the sixth for Hughesville until it was broken up by a bunt base hit by Michael Jacobs. Mitcheltree finished with nine strikeouts and two walks.

"(Mitcheltree) threw a real nice ballgame," said Hughesville manager Gary Gordner.

Hughesville is off today, but the team travels to Montgomery on Wednesday.

LITTLE LEAGUE SOFTBALL

n Lewisburg 12,

DANVILLE -- With the Lewisburg Major Division All-Stars facing elimination from the District 13 Tournament, battery mates Sydney Hoffman and Aubree Henger made sure their team would stick for a couple more days.

Hoffman went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs, while Henger had a double and two RBIs for Lewisburg, which scored seven runs in the second inning to open with an 8-0 lead.
