SELINSGROVE -- Mike Ede had a difficult decision to make last fall.

Ede, who had entered his freshman season at Selinsgrove High School as one of its most promising all-around athletes, gave up football and wrestling, two sports he had loved growing up.

But a shoulder injury from an automobile accent, later aggravated in wrestling, made the decision easier for him.

Ede ran cross country last fall, and Saturday competed in his first major track and field event in his final year of high school. He won both of his races -- the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.60 seconds and the 300 intermediates in 40.16 -- at the annual Selinsgrove High School Classic.

"I didn't want to play football or wrestle because of my shoulder, but I wanted to keep active and keep in shape for track, so I did cross country," Ede said after finishing his events at Harold L. Bolig Memorial Field.

After running the best hurdles times of his career, Ede knew he made the right decision and that he is on the right track to where he wants to be.

"This is what I wanted to do in college -- run track (specifically the hurdles)," he said. "It was a tough choice."

He said what made it tougher was watching his buddies on the football field and on the wrestling mat.

"But I had to make (the choice) for track and for my future. I know it was the right one," he said.

Ede was getting anxious for his final spring sports season to get started. "I've been doing stuff, putting in runs over the winter time. I've been anxious, for sure. There is still a lot of work to do, but I'm happy where I am," he said.

Ede battled Shikellamy's Ryan Wary and Southern Columbia's Luke Rarig in the intermediates, and Rarig in the highs.
