SELINSGROVE -- She already has a District 4 Class AAA gold medal in one sport, but Shikellamy freshman Treicy Cedeno was plenty nervous as he ran in her first major track and field event.

Nervous or not, Cedeno won the 3,200-meter run and took second behind Selinsgrove standout Brianna Carnathan in the 1,600 on Saturday at the Selinsgrove High School Classic.

"Having a lot of people here really makes me nervous," said Cedeno after her cool-down run at Harold L. Bolig Memorial Field.

Cedeno, who placed 14th in the state cross-country championships last fall, spent much of the 3,200 running on the heels of fellow Shik freshman and state cross country medalist Mackenzie Jones before passing her with two laps to go. Cedeno ran the race in 11 minutes, 52.78 seconds with Jones finishing second in 11:57.75.

"I just tried pacing myself and (Jones) was running at a pace I felt comfortable with," Cedeno said. "I just wanted to improve on my times, first of all, and have a good day and have fun with it."

She said she was pleased with her performances in her first big track meet. "I hope to keep getting better," she said, admitting she had no goals coming into the season.

Cedeno said Shikellamy boys coach Jim Bell was the reason she became a high school runner. She does not participate in other sports.

She did not run competitively until joining the junior high program, and since then has begun to compete in some 5K races.

"(Bell) got me into running. He said I looked like I would be a good runner," Cedeno said, "and I said, 'Yeah, I'll try it.' ''

And she just keeps surprising herself. Just like in cross country.

"I didn't expect (the success) at all. I was just trying to do my best and having fun with it."
