NORTHUMBERLAND -- Sometimes baseball can come down to the simplest things as the Lewisburg Major Division All-Stars learned Sunday evening in their opening round game of the District 13 Area II Tournament.
Lewisburg didn't get off to a good start against Warrior Run, allowing three runs in the bottom of the first.
However, they didn't get down on themselves, holding Warrior Run scoreless over the final five innings. Owen Ardt's RBI single in the fourth inning gave Lewisburg a lead it wouldn't relinquish in a 4-3 victory over Warrior Run.
"They kept their cool the whole way through. We struggled in the beginning, but in didn't matter because they kept their heads in the game," Lewisburg manager John Ryan said. "They didn't put their heads down. They did a great job with that."
Lewisburg advances to play the winner of the nightcap at Acorn Park between Shikellamy/Acorn and Milton 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday night. Warrior Run will play the loser of that game in the elimination bracket at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.
Both teams played well on Sunday, but each had an inning in the field that caused them issues.
Lewisburg's came in the bottom of the first after taking the lead on an outfield error in the top of the inning.
Cole Simpler reached on an error to open the bottom of the first for Warrior Run. Brandon Bomberger then singled to put runners on the corners. Simpler scored on a wild pitch. Ahmahd Keyes followed with an RBI infield single. Keyes went to second on passed ball and moved to third on a groundout. Keyes gave Warrior Run a 3-1 lead when he stole home on a throw back to the pitcher.
Lewisburg starter Ben Liscum settled in after the first, not allowing a run over the next two innings to pick up the win. Peter Marrara worked the final three innings, allowing just one hit. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter to pick up the save.
