MMA: Bermudez wins sixth straight inside the octagon

DALLAS — Dennis “The Menace” Bermudez came away with a TKO victory over Jimy “The Kid” Hettes on Saturday night during UFC 171 action at American Airlines Arena.

Bermudez, a former Bloomsburg University wrestler, now has six straight victories inside the octagon. The featherweight is 6-1 since joining the UFC.

Saturday’s third-round TKO was just his second finish inside the octagon. In 2012, Bermudez beat Tommy Hayden by submission with a Guillotine choke.

“I feel like I looked like a ‘Newyorican’ guy going into his best battle,” Bermudez told after the fight. “I expect New York and Puerto Rico are making some noise with this win.  Another TKO is a great accomplishment in my career. I’m looking forward to improving my spot in the rankings. Going 6-0 in the UFC is absolutely incredible.”

Bermudez (13-3) — who picked up an extra $50,000 for “Performance of the Night” — won each of the first two rounds on the judges’ scorecards before finishing Hettes in the third.

Although currently ranked 12th in the UFC featherweight rankings, the Long Island resident will almost certainly move into the top 10 with his latest victory.

Hettes, a Swoyersville resident, falls to 11-2 with the loss.
