Bob Garrett's Talking Points: News from the Jamboree

"Summer afternoon, summer afternoon, to me those have always been the most beautiful words in the English language."

Are you following the news from the National Boy Scout Jamboree? Our local contingent troop's "Home Town Reporters" are doing a great job of posting the news and lots of photos from the Summit-Bechtel Scout Reserve in New River Gorge area of West Virginia.

You can read these reports and view the snapshots on The Daily Item's website at www.dailyitem.com. Once you navigate to this website, you'll see the "2013 Boy Scout Jamboree" tab on the landing page. The Home Town Reporters are Josh Duke, Tyler Sauers and Dru Kline. These guys are tasked with keeping us folks back home up to date with all of the "goings-on" at the Jamboree.

Unfortunately, the national media doesn't usually have much good to say about the Boy Scouts, or young people in general, so the work that these boys are doing is very important. National Jamborees are once-in-a-lifetime type experience for most scouts. These lucky scouts get to attend the "Jambo" as part of a troop that is made up of 36 scouts and 4 leaders. Every scouting council in our nation and many international scouting organizations send troops to the Jamboree. It's possible that the scouts could be from many different units, but for the Jamboree, they're a single contingent troop that represents our entire valley.

I attended the 1973 National Jamboree that was held at the Moraine State Park as a scout and the 2001 National Jamboree that was held at Fort A.P. Hill as our local contingent's Scoutmaster. By the way, visitors are welcome to spend a day at the Jamborees. Please visit www.scouting.org for more information.
