College baseball: Error helps Bucknell defeat Northwestern

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Bucknell provided some drama in its final game before returning to Lewisburg, coming back to defeat Northwestern, 6-5, Saturday.

With the game tied in the bottom of the eigthth inning, Rob Krentzman scored for the Bison after reaching on a single. Anthony Gingerelli singled to right field and Krentzman scored on an error to break a 5-5 tie. Bucknell (7-8-1) took advantage of small miscues by Northwestern (3-14), scoring three unearned runs in the game.

Bryson Hough pitched eight innings for the Bison, giving way to Tucker Rekucki, who shut down the Wildcats in the ninth to preserve the win and earn his third save of the season.

Northwestern jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning before Hough found his groove and the Bison offense chipped away at the hole. Bucknell scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead. After Gingerelli and Mark Powell scored earlier in the inning after leading off with back-to-back singles, Ryan Otis gave the Bison the lead, scoring on an RBI groundout.

Northwestern evened the score in the sixth inning after a double and a sacrifice fly, but Bucknell’s pitching limited the Wildcats to a single hit over the final three innings to keep Northwestern off of the board. Hough retired the last nine batters he faced before Rekucki took over on the mound.

With the win over Northwestern, Bucknell has defeated a Big Ten team in four of the last five seasons.
