Harold Raker's column on track and field: Look out below

The event drew its share of chuckles and the participants became the target of some good-natured ribbing. It was the final dual meet of the season and Selinsgrove boys coach Ryan McGuire finally relented and allowed his throwers to have some fun at their own expense.

When I saw the likes of Harley Stahl, John Daku, Andy Rhein and Mike Walter run an exhibition 4x400-meter relay, I knew I had to write something about it in a future column. The sight of a serious-looking Stahl chugging toward the finish line on the opening leg was something to see. But two columns later, I had not written about it.

Then in Saturday's District 4 Class AA 4x100 relay, I got a reason to reprise that earlier performance (the Seals' throwers ran the race in 4 minutes, 38.32 seconds).

Not only was this one for real, the imposing (for their physical builds) team of Nick Troutman, Eric Joraskie, Elijah Duran and Christian Kelly won the district gold medal with a clocking of 43.85.

Mount Carmel coach Mike Farronato said they had been thinking about putting the unit together for a few weeks. Farronato said that when his bulking relay team lined up for a race out of the area earlier this year, there were some surprised looks by the competitors.

Joraskie admitted they got a few laughs from the other teams -- but not after they ran.

Farronato saw all three of his relay teams advance to the state meet this week, something he doesn't recall ever happening at Mount Carmel.

ANOTHER DOUBLE: Because of errors by district meet officials, Lewisburg senior Udoka Eze was credited only with a win in the triple jump on Saturday. A teammate was listed as the winner of the long jump, but, in reality, Eze was also the long jump gold medalist.
