Wrestling: Milton's Preisch dominates again en route to 160 title

WILLIAMSPORT — Russ Hughes, Benton’s veteran wrestling coach, was able to joke after Milton’s Ryan Preisch had just knocked off one of his better wrestlers, Jeric Kasunic, in the 160-pound final of the District 4 Class AA wrestling tournament at Williamsport on Saturday night.

Preisch, who has spent plenty of time in the Benton wrestling room in the offseason fine-tuning his wrestling skills, claimed his third district title with a solid effort in a 7-2 decision over Kasunic.

“Preisch is a good kid,” said Hughes, whose team collected its second straight team championship, though the Tigers were a dismal 0-for-4 in the finals. “He works hard, and besides that, he’s going to Lehigh. I think (my brother) John (Lehigh’s associate head coach) is gonna owe me.”

The effort by Preisch was no joking matter though. He converted an early takedown, escaped to start the second period, and then added another takedown for a 5-0 lead.

“It’s a place I need to improve on,” Preisch said of the neutral position. “On top, I just like to stay on him for the entire time and not give my opponent any breaks.”

After an escape to begin the third, Preisch was taken down and spent the rest of the period on the bottom.

“I think the problem on bottom was that I felt no urgency but I should have,” Preisch said.”I would have liked to get the major, but there is next weekend. I just have to keep improving on things.”

Preisch, who upped his record to 34-2, cruised into the finals with an easy 16-0 (4:00) technical fall over Towanda sophomore Dayton Wickwire.

“Ryan controlled the pace and controlled the match in the final,” Milton coach Mike Snyder said. “It’s hard to wrestle a guy like Kasunic because he’s so long and lanky and clingy. Benton’s game plan was to keep the match close and Ryan did a good job of not letting that happen by scoring points early.”

Preisch will likely see Kasunic again at next weekend’s regional tournament back in Williamsport.
