SELINSGROVE -- Rookie Hayes Mattern, of Beavertown, led all 25 laps in the late model feature to score his first career late model win Saturday night at Selinsgrove Speedway.
In the 358 35-lap sprint car feature, Josh Beard, of Brogue, was leading on lap 20 at press time.
Mattern, the pro stock Rookie of the Year in 2012, started on the pole and took the lead at the start while former pro stock track champion A.J. Hoffman, of Richfield, trailed in second.
The first of four cautions came out on lap two when Eric Markel slowed in Turn 2.
Mattern opened his lead to nearly a straightaway when he entered lapped traffic on lap 8.
"That was pretty crazy, I didn't expect to be here so soon." he said.
The second caution flew on lap 14 for a three-car accident between Turns 3 and 4 when Chad Davis spun and was tagged by Mike Lupfer and Dylan Yoder, who had no place to go.
Davis had closed in on Hoffman for second when they caught lapped traffic on lap 8. Hoffman pulled in under the same caution with the car smoking.
On the restart, Mattern's slow start caused an accordion effect on the field as he pulled away to a two-second lead over Kenny Trevitz, who was battling with Jim Yoder and Jeff Rine.
Mattern continued to stretch his lead when the third caution came out on lap 17 as Ron Shultz tagged the fourth-turn wall and slowed to a stop in Turn 1. Tony Adams also stopped on lap 17 with mechanical issues.
Trevitz closed on Mattern on lap 18 after the restart with Yoder in third and Rine in fourth.
Yoder then slowed with a flat tire on the backstretch on lap 24 while Mattern hit the wall when he jumped the cushion, but, the caution had come out for Yoder, giving Mattern the lead back.
