Area roundup: Midd-West girls shock Shamokin

Midd-West 34, Shamokin 22


COAL TOWNSHIP — Midd-West claimed perhaps one of its most unusual wins in recent memory against defending District 4 Class AAA champion Shamokin on Saturday.

The Mustangs were held scoreless in the second quarter, but they still beat the Indians 34-22 in the Heartland Athletic Conference-Division I contest.

“This is a huge win for our program. Shamokin is one of the top teams in the league,” said Midd-West coach Dave Fadale. “Our girls are learning to play with some toughness.”

Despite the scoreless second period, Midd-West (5-5, 2-3 HAC-I) only trailed 11-8 at the half.

In the second half, Mikayla Beiler took over the game for the Mustangs by scoring 15 of her game-high 19 points. Beiler also had seven steals, plus Allie Camp added eight rebounds and five steals.

Shamokin falls to 6-5, 4-1.

Danville 57, Selinsgrove 40

SELINSGROVE — Freshman forward Amber Renz continued her successful first season by scoring 20 points in the Ironmen’s HAC-I victory over the Seals.

Siobhan Bross and Erica Heath added 11 and 10 points for Danville (7-1).

Selinsgrove (5-6, 3-2 HAC-I) also got 20 points from senior forward Kierstin Craig-Sovic and 10 rebounds from Jess Kerstetter.

Montoursville 45, Southern Columbia 33

MONTOURSVILLE — A low-scoring first half doomed the Tigers in the HAC-II matchup against the Warriors.

Montoursville (8-2 overall) led 18-8 at the half. The Warriors got 12 points from Kirsten O’Malley.

Mallory Tomaschik scored 17 points for Southern (10-2).

Lewisburg 60, Hughesville 24

LEWISBURG — Maria Kelleher knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 19 points in the HAC-II victory for the Green Dragons.

Lois Lesher added nine points for Lewisburg (7-3, 3-2 HAC-II).

Milton 37, Jersey Shore 31

JERSEY SHORE — Led by Emily Baker’s 14 points and five rebounds, the Black Panthers edged the Bulldogs in a closely-contested HAC-I matchup.

Brooke Swartz pulled down seven rebounds and Katelyn Gensel had five for Milton (6-5, 4-1 HAC-I).
