Line Mountain to honor Glenn Ressler on Saturday

MANDATA — Prior to Saturday night’s homecoming football game against Williams Valley, Line Mountain will officially name the field at Eagles Stadium after Glenn Ressler.

Glenn Ressler Field will honor the Mahanoy Joint graduate who was selected to the Big 33 team in 1961. The offensive and defensive lineman went onto to have a stellar career under Rip Engle at Penn State. Ressler had 15 tackles in an upset of No. 1 Ohio State and was later named the nation’s top college lineman by the Philadelphia Sportswriters Assocation.

As a senior in 1964, Ressler was a consensus All-American at center and middle guard and won the Maxwell Award, presented to the nation’s most outstanding player.

He was also named to Penn State’s Athletic Honor Roll for excellence in sports and academics and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Ressler followed that with a tremendous NFL career. He was the 36th overall pick during the third round draft selection of the NFL by the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Colts, he went on to play for 10 seasons with the Colts as offensive guard for Johnny Unitas. He was a member of the Colt’s 1969 Super Bowl team and played in Super Bowl V, when the Colts defeated the Dallas Cowboys.

After his football career, Mr. Ressler spent 30 years in the restaurant business and 10 years in real estate.

He and his wife, Sandy, have two grown children, Kevin and Cami, a daughter-in-law, Barbara, and two grandchildren, Brianna and Owen.
