A bakers’ dozen of wrestlers from Selinsgrove and Shikellamy descended upon the Altoona Field House for Friday’s start of the Class AAA Northwest Regional.
But once the first day of action was completed, only two wrestlers remained unscathed and alive for a gold medal.
Shikellamy senior 220-pounder Dwayne Pepper and fellow 220-pounder Andrew Boob from Selinsgrove were the only wrestlers to make it into the semifinals, but it was in no way an easy task for the two.
Pepper won by a 7-4 decision over Phillipsburg-Osceola’s Nick Gray in the prelims before he edged Mifflin County’s Kyle Kahley, 3-2, in the quarterfinals.
Boob, a sophomore, decisioned State College’s Sheldon Davis 6-0 before he took an 8-5 victory over Central Mountain’s Cameron Porter.
Among the other wrestlers to appear in the quarterfinals was Nick Cashdollar at 132, where he fell by a 7-4 decision to Carrick’s Cody Kirk. In the first round he beat Erie Prep’s Alex Root, 11-5.
At 138, Tristan Paul also fell in the quarters for Shikellamy with a 5-3 loss to General McLane’s Keller Watkins. Paul opened the tourney with an 8-2 win over Central Mountain’s Emery Watson.
In 145-pound action, the Braves’ Jared Brown opened with a pin over Perry Traditional Academy’s Kereon Jones before he was pinned himself by Jersey Shore’s Hadyn Swartwood in the quarters.
The Selinsgrove wrestlers who also competed in the quarterfinals included Bryce Reichenbach at 113, who opened with a pin before falling by a 9-0 major decision to Phillipsburg-Osceola’s Chris Thompson.
Nathan Bingaman (170) also fell in the quarterfinals for the Seals.
Bingaman began with a pin over Hollidaysburg’s Noah Worley in just 57 seconds, but in the quarters Bingaman fell in overtime to McDowell’s Coleman Cousins, 4-2.
