Bob Garrett's Talking Points: Many ways to report a deer harvest

There's an app for that

The "PA State Game Lands" app can now be downloaded to most mobile devices through links on the Game Commission's web site.

By syncing with a smartphone's or a computer tablet's built-in navigation features, this app provides turn-by-turn directions to the game land destinations you select. Once you've selected the game lands that you're interested in, you can learn many details such as the Wildlife Management Unit, county, acreage, hunting zones, hunting hours, 2012-13 seasons and bag limits and even more.

The app includes built-in mapping capabilities allowing you to browse the selected game land boundaries, potential parking areas and shooting ranges that are displayed over your choice of USGS 7.5 minute topographic maps, satellite imagery or road maps. Heck, you'll even find out if cellular phone service is available on the game lands.

With this app you can also log-onto "Report Your Harvest" feature and input your harvest data.

The app was developed by Gogal Publishing, of Warrington in Bucks County, and sells for $9.99 plus tax. By the way, did you know that are State Game Lands in every Pennsylvania county except Philadelphia County and Delaware County?

Get ready for trout

More details will follow on this announcement, but I wanted to give you plenty of notice that the R.B. Winter Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be offering fly tying classes in Lewisburg early next year. The classes are scheduled to run from Jan. 14 through March 18. The classes will be held in the lower level of Christ's Lutheran Church in Lewisburg on Monday evenings from 7-9.
