Wary, Eze earn Daily Item track and field honors

doke Eze closed out his senior season in style, winning District 4 Class AA titles in both the long and triple jumps and helping his team qualify for the PIAA championships in the 1,600-meter relay. He followed that with a relay medal and a triple jump medal in Shippensburg.

Ryan Wary had a junior season that has his coaches and fans clamoring for more. He won District 4 Class AAA championships in the 100- and 200-meter dashes as well as the 300 intermediate hurdles.

Lewisburg's Eze and Shikellamy's Wary are this year's Daily Item Male Field and Track Athletes of the Year, respectively.

In addition, Milton's Tom Leeser is The Daily Item Coach of the Year.

Eze was obviously proud of what he accomplished in the jumps, but seemed more elated about what he and his teammates (Will Sumfest, Sean Walker and Nick Scullin) were able to do in the 1,600 relay.

The team was assembled about a month into the season, but continued to bring down its times before peaking when it counted.

Eze will attend Cornell University in the fall and said he may try to walk on to the track and field team.

Wary, already receiving notice of some college coaches, continued to impress as the season went along. If he had not already opened some eyes, he certainly did that at the district meet at Susquehanna University's Nicholas A. Lopardo Stadium.

He began the finals by winning the 100 meters in 11.06 seconds. He followed that with a win in the competitive 300 hurdles, holding off Williamsport standout Weston Cuozzo and Selinsgrove rival Mike Ede. Wary's time was 39.39 as all three ran sub-40s.

Wary put the icing on the cake when he held off a strong Milton contingent to win the 200 in 22.54 seconds, just ahead of Black Panthers Trevor Zimmerman (22.94) and Brian Zimmerman (22.98).
