The Bucknell women’s basketball team has received a bid to compete in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI), marking its return to the postseason for the first time since the 2007-08 campaign. The Bison will face the University of Maine-Orono in a first- round game at the Cross Insurance Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
“This will be a really nice experience for our student-athletes and this program,” second-year head coach Aaron Roussell said of the postseason berth. “They have made great strides this season, and it is both a reward for their efforts, as well as a building block for the future. On a personal note, I am just glad I get to spend more time with this special group.”
The WBI, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year, is a 16-team tournament that is split into two regions. Bucknell is the No. 2 seed in the East Region, and Maine earned the No. 7 seed. The victor in the showdown between the two squads will play the winner of No. 3 Bryant and No. 6 Fairfeld on either March 22 or 23.
Bucknell, which finished its Patriot League campaign with an 11-7 record and is currently 16-13 overall, will be making its fourth appearance in the postseason and its first since the 2007-08 season. The Bison have never won a postseason contest outside of their conference tourney. , earned NCAA tournament berths after winning the Patriot League title in 2002 and 2008, and the team also played in the WNIT in 2007 after winning the league’s regular season crown.
