Danville's Jake Gronsky nears end of collegiate career

DANVILLE — Remember me?: Jake Gronsky

Name: Jake Gronsky

High School: Danville

College: Monmouth

Class: Senior

Major: Communications

Sport: Baseball

Lately: Went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs in Thursday’s 3-0 win over Princeton; went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI in Sunday’s 8-7 loss to St. Peter’s

Why I chose Monmouth: “Going through the recruiting process my junior year, I was looking for a program that focuses on the player. I was pretty lucky that I was able to look at a good amount of options.

“I fell in love with the place, and I knew it was the place for me. I knew I wanted to go here since sophomore year.”

Biggest adjustment to the college game: “One of the biggest adjustments you’re going to have to make is understanding yourself as a player. You’re now facing kids that are just as talented as you and had just as successful high school careers. ... The game is much faster.”

Biggest surprise about the college game: “One of the things people don’t understand is what goes into the college baseball season. ... (What people) don’t see is us studying on the bus riding home from the game, or at 5 a.m. in the winter hitting the weights.

“It’s a year-round (endeavor).”

Advice for high school kids thinking of playing sports in college: “The top advice that kids need to hear, especially from Central Pa., is your dream of playing college or a professional sport is not as far away as you think. There is an opportunity, be it Divisions I, II or III.

“This is the time where you need to stay focused on what you want to do and believe that it definitely can happen.”
