Tigers get lead, hold off Red Tornadoes

CATAWISSA -- Southern Columbia has struggled to maintain leads beyond halftime this season. On Monday night, the Tigers had the luxury of coming from behind.

Southern quickly erased a two-point halftime deficit, and the Tigers pulled away in the third quarter for a 55-41 victory over Mount Carmel in a Heartland Athletic Conference Division II matchup.

"We've often had the lead (at halftime), but we tend to lose it," said Southern coach Joellen Gallinot. "Our goal was to get the lead and keep it."

Mission accomplished.

Junior forward Jordan Marks scored 10 points in the third quarter and junior guard Ali Oley had six of her game-high 22 points as the Tigers (6-6 overall, 4-2 HAC-II) broke open a tight contest with a 22-10 advantage in the period. Mount Carmel (6-6, 1-4) was within 33-31 midway through the period, but Southern closed with a 14-6 run to pull away for a 45-35 lead after three periods.

"We came down, we missed some shots, and we turned it over to them. I need to figure out how to get us better," Mount Carmel coach Mark Moyer said. "I think we can play with any team in our league, but we can't have breakdowns like we did tonight."

Both teams were content to press full-court nearly the entire night, which led to breakaways and turnovers for each team. But Southern's pressure was the more effective, and the Tigers took advantage with eight takeaways in the decisive third period.

"I thought we would handle (their pressure) better," Moyer said. "They were able to capitalize, and we just weren't where we needed to be defensively."

Cady Faust's runner gave the Tigers a 39-32 lead, and Marks' jumper made it 41-32. Seconds later, Oley scored on a runner to make it 43-32, and Mount Carmel wasn't able to get it under double digits again.
