Little League: Selinsgrove junior all-stars use seventh-inning rally to top Juniata

By The Daily Item

NEW BERLIN -- Trailing by three runs and down to its final three outs of the game, the Selinsgrove Junior Division All-Star team picked no better time to get its bats out.

Selinsgrove scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to comeback and take a 7-6 victory over Juniata in a District 13 winners' bracket game Saturday at New Berlin Legion Field.

Morgan Fisher got the rally started with a single hit just inside the right field foul line. Dawson Klinger followed with a base hit to score pinch-runner Ricky Koch.

Kyle Mertz followed with an RBI triple and then Griffin Kirchner bounced an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 6.

Jake Nylund then set the stage for the winning run to score by drawing a walk to reach base. And with Kirchner on third on a wild pitch, Nylund drew the attention of the Juniata pitcher on a stolen base attempt to allow Kirchner to scamper home for the winning run.

There were no outs when the winning run scored for Selinsgrove, and Mertz got the victory in relief of starter Aaron Zechman.

Mertz also led the team with three hits, while Kirchner and Klinger finished with two hits apiece.

Selinsgrove now plays Danville in the winners' bracket final on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
