District 4 boys cross-country: Lewisburg wins title, Danville third

BLOOMSBURG — While the race to become the next President of the United States is turning out to be a close one, the race for the 2012 District 4 Class AA boys team championship couldn’t have been any closer.

Despite missing one of its top runners, Lewisburg put together its best effort at the right time of the year to edge out both Towanda and Danville to claim the title Thursday at Bloomsburg University.

The Green Dragons totaled 88 points, while the Black Knights and Ironmen had 89 and 90, respectively.

“I’m kind of speechless about that. We did what we needed to do, and what’s impressive to me is that we were without Glen Knight, who’s sick. He’s been our No. 4 guy consistently, sometimes No. 3, and he’s been a real solid performer for us,” said Lewisburg coach Mark Sundberg.

“I said to the guys that they will have to step it up three notches, because it’s their race to lose and we just had to show that we can do what we’ve been doing all year — and show them you’re champions one more time.”

When the results of the race were originally compiled Danville and Towanda were tied for second place with 89 points, with the Ironmen being awarded the runner-up finish by virtue of a better showing from the team’s sixth runner.

However, a mistake was found in the scoring and the Black Knights earned the second and final PIAA qualifying berth.
