Motorsports: Nate Snyder enjoys early success at Selinsgrove

Snyder enjoys early success at Selinsgrove

Nate Snyder has always loved racing at Selinsgrove Speedway. Even when he left the local track during the 2008 season to drive a 360 sprint for Elmer Stoltzfus in the United Racing Company series, the Halifax driver longed for his Saturday nights in the 358 sprints at Selinsgrove.

So, when the URC deal fell through in the off-season, Snyder knew where he would spend his Saturday nights this spring and summer.

"I was originally going to run the 360 deal with Elmer, but that fell through with the economy being bad and his sponsors pulled out," Snyder said.

He missed Selinsgrove and the decision to return to the big half-mile was an easy one.

"Last year, I didn't race the last five weeks up there, and it was nice to come back this year," said Snyder, 33.

You might say that.

Until two weeks ago (the program was rained out last week), when a crash relegated him to a 22nd-place finish, Snyder had never finished out of the top 10 and led the points for most of the season. He is now second, 25 points behind two-time track champion Blane Heimbach of Selinsgrove.

"I'm glad we have been haviang pretty good luck, other than (the last race)," Snyder said.

The great start to the season is especially meaningful now that Snyder is back running his own team again, after having raced for top-flight Zane Highlands Auto Body.

"It is nice to know everyting is mine and it is pretty much all our money and we are calling the shots," Snyder said.

And challenging.

"It's definitely tougher doing your own deal. Like (two weeks ago), I had to work 45 to 50 hours a week (as a jockey/driver for UPS Freight, Mechanicsburg) and you are making all the calls, getting the parts picked up," he said.
