High school roundup: Dragons' Smith gets 100th victory

COUDERSPORT -- After an exceptional football season, Lewisburg's Brandon Smith has reached some rarified air on the wrestling mat as well.

Smith's 29-second pin over Bradford's Zach Zawatski at 220 pounds was the 100th for his career as Lewisburg took a 66-9 victory in Saturday's Coudersport Duals.

The Green Dragons also beat Coudersport, 54-23; but they fell to Maplewood, 37-36.

Smith became the 10th Lewisburg wrestler in program history to reach 100 wins.

Including Smith's win, the Green Dragons got a total of four pins.

n Shikellamy 44,

State College 25

SUNBURY -- The Braves got their first Big 7 victory of the year as they opened the match with four wins to beat the Little Lions.

A major decision from Dwayne Pepper at 195 pounds and a Dan Karpinski pin at 220 got Shikellamy (5-5, 1-0 BSL) out to a 19-0 lead.

The Braves later got pins from Nick Gittens (106), Tyler Hepler (126) and John Rohrbach (160) and also a big 3-1 decision from Tristan Paul at 132 that occurred over Mike Kauffman, a state qualifier a year ago.

State College falls to 3-9, 0-4 in league action.

Darryl Englehart also picked up a good win at 170, a 9-5 decision over Alex Silver, according to Shikellamy coach John Supsic.


n Milton 43,

Midd-West 26

MILTON -- Twelve points apiece from Katelyn Gensel and Linea Brouse lifted the Black Panthers to the HAC-I win.

Gensel also pulled down 10 rebounds as Milton (4-5, 2-1 HAC-I) out-rebounded Midd-West 44-30.

Mikayla Beiler led Midd-West with eight points.

n Selinsgrove 40,

Jersey Shore 29

SELINSGROVE -- Laura Long's near double-double of 14 points and nine rebounds helped give the Seals the HAC-I win. Selinsgrove improves to 4-5 overall.

n Shamokin 57,

Mifflinburg 36

COAL TOWNSHIP -- Despite the best efforts of the Wildcats' Sara Stauffer, the Indians took control early and went on for the HAC-I victory.

Stauffer scored 14 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and had four steals for Mifflinburg (1-8, 0-3 HAC-I).

Olivia Bonshock paced Shamokin (5-4, 3-0) with 12 points.

n Lewisburg 51,

Newport 32

LEWISBURG -- Maria Kelleher's game-high 21 points propelled the Green Dragons to the nonleague win.

Kiersten Blakeslee added six points and seven rebounds for Lewisburg (6-2).

n Southern Columbia 41,

Warrior Run 32

CATAWISSA -- The Tigers sent the Defenders to their third straight loss to start conference play on the strength of some balanced scoring.

Mallory Tomaschik scored 10 points while three other players had either eight or nine points for Southern (8-1, 3-0 HAC-II).

Steph Shamburg led Warrior Run (5-3, 0-3) with 12 points.

n Lourdes Regional 48,

Williams Valley 26

COAL TOWNSHIP -- Sarah Getchey totaled 14 points, six rebounds and five assists as the Red Raiders took the Schuylkill League game.

Nikki Komara and Rachel Schultz added 10 points and five steals apiece, plus Schultz also had five rebounds and Komara had three assists for Lourdes (7-2).


n Muncy 82,

Warrior Run 65

MUNCY -- Collin Foresman's game-high 25 points weren't enough as the Defenders fell to Muncy in the nonleague game.

Zach Burrows added 14 points for Warrior Run (1-7).

Dawson Fox scored 22 points and Omar Sabanovic had 18 for Muncy (5-1).


n Shikellamy takes near sweep of Lewisburg

SUNBURY -- Behind a 726 series from Zack Williams and four other series over 600, the Braves took a 4-0 victory over the Green Dragons in HAC boys.

Williams' high game was a 269 and Randy Ripple had a 266 game and 627 series for Shikellamy (7-1).

On the girls side, Shikellamy claimed a 3-1 win over Lewisburg (8-4). A 601 series by Justice Heller led the Braves (6-2).

For Lewisburg's boys (5-7) and girls (8-4), Colin Broadwell had a 720 series, and Alexus Neuer rolled a 278 game and finished with a 677 series while Rebekah Sheelsey had a 279 game and a 622 series for the Green Dragons.

n Milton almost sweeps Danville in boys/girls

DANVILLE -- The Black Panthers took a 4-0 victory in boys and a 3-1 win over the Green Dragons girls.

For Milton, Mark Artley had a 254 game and 652 series, while Megan Sherman led the girls team with a 233 game and 612 series.

Nate Lubeski and Indeah Lewis led Danville with a 267 game and a 714 series, and a 255 game and 655 series, respectively.

n Selinsgrove boys sweep, girls beat Midd-West

SELINSGROVE -- Matt Wolfe and Aaron Dues each posted a 600 series to help the Seals sweep the cross-county rival Mustangs, 4-0.

On the girls side, Brynn Musser rolled a 619 series as Selinsgrove took a 3-1 victory. Jenna Yarger led Midd-West with a 606 series.
