Motorsports: Dan Stone wins Three State Flyers late model feature

SELINSGROVE — Dan Stone, of Thompson, held of the charges and Williamsport’s Matt Cochran and Danville’s Steve Campbell, to record his sixth-career win at Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday night in the 35-lap Three State Flyers late model feature.

Mark Smith, of Sunbury, won the 25-lap 360 sprint car feature.

Stone took the lead on the initial start of the feature, when Dylan Yoder, who started 18th spun, along with Pancho Lawler, to bring out the first caution of the race.

And then the rain came.

The rain delay lasted more than an hour and the race was reverted back to a complete restart.

On the restart, Stone — who was the first-ever driver to turn a lap at the track under the 19-second mark — pulled away from second-place starter Andy Haus.

Cochran moved into second on lap two and by lap four, Stone started to open his lead.

“The track crew did a great job and the track was a little slicker, but the rain brought it right back,” Stone said. “The track stayed smooth; I thought it would really get tore up with all the moisture in it, but it was really good.”

Stone moved into lapped traffic on lap seven and as Cochran closed the gap from 2.3-seconds to under a second before the caution came out as the leaders were about to enter heavy lapped traffic on lap 16 when Jim Bernheisel slowed in Turn 2.

Cochran remained in striking distance after the restart but he had a flat right rear tire on lap 26 to bring out the second caution of the race.

Campbell, who had battled with Jeff Rine in the early part of the race for fourth, move into second when Cochran pulled off the track.

Campbell was part of a four-car battle, along with Stone, Jeff Rine and Haus over the final few laps.

Campbell stayed within a half-car length of Stone before Stone started to open his lead again on lap 31.

“As the green flags kept going, our car was getting tighter and together,” Campbell said. “I had to start throwing it into the corner and when you do that, you start scrubbing off speed.”

Stone went on to win by 1.3-seconds over Campbell with Haus (third), Kenny Pettyjohn (fourth) and D. Yoder (fifth) following suit.

Sixth through 10th were Tony Adams, Jim Yoder, Jason Covert, Bryan Bernheisel and Chad Hollenbeck, respectively.

Heats for the 25 late models were won by Rine, Campbell and Adams. Campbell set the 8-lap track record in his heat race with a time of 2 minutes, 36.275 seconds.

In the 25-lap, caution-filled sprint car feature, Smith, who became the first repeat winner in the sprint car division this year, took the lead on lap 13 when Selinsgrove’s Cody Keller fell off the pace with mechanical issues while leading.

“I got a real good start and that really helped,” Smith said. “I was kind of hoping that lapped traffic would get us caught up to Cody.”

Keller took the lead from polesitter Colby Womer, of Mount Pleasant Mills, in Turn 3 on lap four. Keller opened his lead to a straightaway over Smith, who got past Womer for second on lap six.

The red flag came out on the lap 13 restart as Mark Bittner and Matt Horst crashed in Turn 2 on the restart. Both drivers were OK.

Smith had a close call on lap 19 when Brad Franks spun in front of him in Turn 3.

Pat Cannon, Davie Franek, Jason Shultz and Womer rounded out the top five, respectively.

Sixth through 10th were Brock Zearfoss, T.J. Stutts, Robbie Stillwaggon, Mike Walter and Steve Collins, respectively.

Heats for the 24 sprint cars were won by Womer, Duane Mausteller and Ryan Kissinger.
