Outdoorsman Expo: Beagles put a smile on his face

— Having a bad day? William Moyer, of Dornsife, can help.

His solution would involve four legs, two droopy ears and some barking when downwind of a rabbit.

“It is hard to have a bad day around a beagle,” Moyer said. “Even the AKC, when describing the beagle, says it has a ‘merry’ temperament.”

That disposition was one of the main attractions for Moyer some 15 years ago when he had to have his pet lab put to sleep and was searching for a new companion. He bought a beagle puppy and got into training it.

“I thought that was neat, and before long I got another dog,” Moyer said. “Before long, I had a number of beagles. When people asked why I had so many, I’d tell them it was a ‘beagle experiment.’ ”

Moyer will be speaking about his “beagle experiment” and the lessons he has learned in training beagles for hunting at 10 a.m. today at the 2012 C.A.M.O. Outdoorsman Expo at the Willow Lake Wesleyan Campground near New Columbia. He plans to bring a number of his beagles and a few puppies and share some stories and experiences picked up along the way.
