5:45 pm: Solanco junior Beau Spiller pinned Shikellamy senior Dwayne Pepper 29 seconds into the second period of the Class AAA quarterfinal this afternoon. Pepper rebounded with a tough 3-2 win over Lower Dauphin's David Wuenster to rebound in the consolation round.
The victory improves Pepper to 25-4 on the year, but more importantly assures Pepper of a state medal. Pepper will meed Hempfield's Fred Mantsch in tomorrow's consolation. He can still finish as high as third, but will finish no lower than eighth.
The Class AA semifinals begin at 6:30. FIve Valley wrestlers are alive for a shot at state gold: Southern Columbia's Todd Lane (120), Kent Lane (138) and Blake Marks (152), along with Mifflinburg's Cole Walter (152) and Milton's Ryan Preisch (160).
Noon: Max Reed's run at state's ends with a heart-breaking 1-0 loss in the second-round of consolations to Samuel Colebert of Oswayo Valley. Reed ends a solid junior season at 33-12.
11:05: Upper Dauphin's Coy Campbell's run ended at 113 pounds when he was pinned by Jamestown sophomore Faris Messai. Campbell ends the year 31-7.
At 120, Warrior Run's Zack LeBarron ran into a returning PIAA champion in the consolation round and was eliminated from states. LeBarron dropped a tough 2-0 decision to SW Regional champ George Phillippi, who was upset in the quarterfinals. LeBarron ends a a successful sophomore season 37-4.
10:40 a.m.: Milton senior Ryan Preisch rolled to another win in the 160-pound bracket to advance to the semifinals. Preisch toppled Brookville junior Jimmy Miller, 8-0.
Preisch, now 39-2, has won his first two matches by fall and major decision. A bronze medalist last year, Preisch meets SW regional champion Jared Walkier (42-1) in tonight's semifinal.
Also at 160, Lewisburg's Max Reed fell into the consolation round with a 4-1 setback to SE regional champion Briton Shelton. Reed, now 33-11, takes on Oswayo Valley senior Samuel Colebert in the second round of consolations later today.
